Cropan's Boa Corallus
cropanii Hoge 1953
The Round Island boa is usually considered the rarest of the boids. Well, Cropan's boas might just be less
common than the Round Island boa. Round Island boas are listed in C.I.T.E.S. and a few specimens are known to
exist. But only three specimens of Cropan's boas are known to exist. All are preserved in collections and
this certainly makes them one of the rarest and least-known snakes in the world.
Because few individuals have been found, virtually nothing is known about their natural history. In fact,
the Cropan's boa has only been found in the vicinity of São Paulo, Brazil. This is a drier region and
nothing is known regarding the arboreal nature of this species.
Most people consider Cropan's Boas the most basal (ancestral) of the Corallus and for a long time, it
was considered to be Xenoboa cropanii rather than Corallus cropanii. From photos, they seem to
be a large heavy-bodied species.
