Atheris nitschei
Great Lakes Bush Viper
PHOTOS  DISTRIBUTION

General Description: A large bush viper reaching 30-35 inches, Nitschei's viper is also heavy-bodied. It is found in central Africa and its coloration is usually pale to dark green with black bands down the dorsal ridge. The black forms a V shape on the top of the flat head and the nose is slightly upturned. It is only somewhat arboreal and may hunt at night on the ground where it feeds on mammals, lizards, and frogs.

Little is known of the venom and no antivenin is produced.

Care and Propagation: Tall, large cages are required for this species, with lots of strong branches and natural or fake foliage provided for shelter. Moderate humidity (30-40%) is sufficient, as well as moderate heat (78-80ºF). These animals are known for their nasty tempers and extreme caution should be taken until they are firmly established and calm.

Few breedings have occurred and little information is readily available. Manipulation of the wet/dry cycle, heating, and lighting are recommended.
